WEEK 6 ASSIGNMENTS AND INFORMATION

Welcome to Week 6. This week, we’ll continue with the of  peace journalism in action by looking at a case study from Nigeria. In this case, the media’s irresponsibility lead to riots and deaths. We’ll also be looking at teaching peace journalism, and how you can all (I hope) become peace journalism instructors yourselves.

You might want to start thinking about next week, when you will begin work on a reportage style radio story with a peace journalism theme. You will have two weeks to do this—week 7 and week 8, the last week of the course. So, please start thinking about potential topics, etc. I will, of course, post much more about this next week.

Your readings—Week 6
1. Nigeria case study—
2. Teaching peace journalism—Skip ahead, and read pages 15-18 only in this file (You’ve already read the rest). These are resources I have given others so that they might begin teaching peace journalism themselves. This includes an outline for a university PJ course, a three-day seminar outline, and a list of online resources that an instructor might use when teaching the course.

Your written assignment
1.  Answer the following questions about the Nigeria case study. Make each answer about ½ page for each question. Explain your responses.

1)       Could the author have known she would cause offence to one community?
2)       Should someone censor herself just because a group of people threaten public violence if something appears in print that they don’t like?
3)       What do you think about the actions of the editor, who tried to change the text of the offending article at the last minute?
4)       Does the right to free speech mean that a person has the right to shout “fire” in a crowded theatre?

Due date: Due Oct. 30 midnight Uganda time. Emailed to gloriaaciro@yahoo.co.uk.

Help with paper? Gloria will be providing most of the assistance as you write your papers, and Youngblood will be providing most of the feedback (and grades) after the papers are finished. So, if you're stuck, please contact Gloria first.

This week's discussion question:
One of your readings this week was materials for teaching a peace journalism course or seminar. My question to you: How can you organize courses/seminars/discussions with colleagues about peace journalism? What’s the best way to reach them, and how will you convince them about the utility (usefulness) and power of peace journalism?

NEW: How to post your discussion question response:
I will put a link on the website each week that says, click here to post your discussion questions. Then, once you’re on that page, find the tab (button) near the upper right corner that says comments. Click it, and select “show comment stream”. A box will open showing all the other comments. WEEK 4 ASSIGNMENTS AND INFORMATION

Dates: Oct 10-16

Welcome to Week 4. This week, our theme is peace journalism in the news. In the news in Uganda and everywhere else, some stories of course cover wars and other types of violence. Other stories may not address violence directly, but may, if done irresponsibly, possible create a situation that encourages violence. That’s what these articles deal with.

To review...
If you haven't read everything yet from weeks 3, please do so.
1.      Read/review the rubric in my old handout packet (Peace Journalism Resource Packet) on page 6. (You may still have a printed copy of this). This is a checklist you can use to evaluate if materials is or isn’t peace journalism. https://owa.park.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://captain.park.edu/syoungblood/PJ%2520handouts%25202010%2520Uganda%2520post.doc

Pay special attention to the evaluation system/rubric that they use to evaluate stories to see if  they are practicing peace journalism. See especially pages 44, 47-49.

Week 4 readings
1. This file contains articles about PJ and 9-11; PJ and a famous murder trial in the US: PJ and Norway (following the bombing there). I’ve put them all together to demonstrate, I hope, that PJ can apply to a number of situations that we may encounter as journalists.

Your written assignment
1. WRITE A SHORT REACTION PAPER –around 2 pages—How does peace journalism apply to your daily reporting? Use examples of the things that you report, and then talk about how peace journalism (and the ideas/principles of peace journalism) might be used to change or improve your reporting. (For example, if you cover politics, how can you use PJ to improve or make more peaceful your political coverage? Or if you cover businesses/economics, how could/would you apply PJ to this? Or if you report on individuals or do feature stories, how can you use PJ principles to make this better?)

Due date: Due Oct. 16 midnight Uganda time.

Please spend a moment and comment on one of the articles you’ve read (9-11 or Norway or Casey Anthony or PJ and the apocalypse). Do you agree or disagree with my statements? (Please feel free to disagree!!)

HOW TO POST THE RESPONSE TO THE DISCUSSION QUESTION--
I will put a link on the website each week that says, click here to post your discussion questions.
